October/November Spooktacular Book Haul

It is October and Halloween is just a few days away. In Malaysia we do not celebrate Halloween but I have been able to experienced the celebration when I was in the UK. So for this month and also November, I decided to read books that are related to Halloween.

Review - Something Strange and Deadly

Title: Something Strange and Deadly
Author: Susan Dennard
Publisher: Harper Teen
Publication Date: 24th July 2012
Genre: Young Adult (Historical + Zombies)
Source: Purchase (MPH Bookstore)
Format: Paperback
Pages: 388 pages
Summary: The year is 1876, and there’s something strange and deadly loose in Philadelphia.Eleanor Fitt has a lot to worry about. Her brother has gone missing, her family has fallen on hard times, and her mother is determined to marry her off to any rich young man who walks by. But this is nothing compared to what she’s just read in the newspaper. The Dead are rising in Philadelphia.

I read this book to have this Halloweeney feeling and to make me remember how Halloween was celebrated during my 3 years in the UK. I was so sure that this book would be a bore to read because of the setting but was I WRONG! I had fun reading the book and even read it during invigilating my students' exam.

Eleanor Fitt is my kind of heroine though there parts of the book that shows her as an annoying character but all in all she is strong and can be unladylike when it is needed. She loves her brother so much and the truth really shocked her.

Daniel is a swoooooooon. He treats Eleanor like an opponent and not like the gentlemen of that era. I could follow him everywhere he goes. Though it hurts me when I can't figure out his feelings for Eleanor but I am still hoping for the best.

The book is fast paced and full of action. That is why I can't put it down because I want to know what happens next. Zombies are awesome! That is all I can say. Anything that has zombies in it, excites me. (Warm Bodies and World War Z is my faves). I have to buy the second book to know what is going to happen next.

Top Ten Tuesday - Top Ten Books Turn-offs while reading

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created at The Broke and the Bookish. This week's topic is Ten Books Turn-Offs While Reading.

I can't think of 10 but only 6 and this one is hard but here goes....

1. Damsel in distress female characters - I hate reading about some chick who are always needed help from the male character. I love an ass-kicking female character

2. Too preachy (Religion) - I don't mind if there are some indication of a religion but not too much until it makes me sick of the religion

3. Insta-love - Logically,we do not fall in love like after 1 second we see that girl or boy. There are development.

4. Open ended ending - NO! please just have either a happy ending or sad ending so that I don't have to guess

5. Anything associated with the word voyeurism - Just a big NO!

6. Too good to be true characters - nice teeth, nice hair, flawless skin. come on! I want flaws!
